This morning started out with a phone call from the pulmonologist saying that he scoped Isy's lungs already, by about 8:30am. He did not find anything like cancer but perhaps some scar tissue related to pneumonia that she had in the past. Her lung bled a lot during the scope, so much that he couldn't find just one area where it was bleeding. He needed to put her on a ventilator (a machine that breathes for you) during the procedure and he recommended leaving her on it so that her body could rest while they continued to work up that lung. He also said that he was going to be out of town over the weekend and felt uncomfortable leaving her in the hospital over the weekend with active bleeding, without someone else to take over. I greatly appreciated his willingness to admit this even though it meant being transferred away from Goshen (where I work!) and to Elkhart. I have faith and confidence in EGH too. I worked there for 7 years and have many good memories of great things happening there. It would just be so convenient to have her literally around the corner in the same building! Off to Elkhart she went by ambulance.
Quinn is in the midst of all-star baseball games and tonight was his night to pitch. Madison is supposed to play softball in Columbia City. I felt very uncomfortable being out of town in Columbia City (1 hour) so we elected to send Madison with friends and the rest of us stayed back. We decided to take a break from our new hospital life of waiting, waiting and more waiting and go to Quinn's game which was 5 minutes up the road at Baugo. I was SO GLAD we decided to go to Quinn's game! He pitched a one-hitter and had 11 strike-outs in 4 innings (a potential of 12 outs total). He said he pitched for Beppe tonight. Talking to himself all the time, "This one is for you Beppe." Our sweet, sweet Quinn. I could tell that he was worried about Beppe tonight but thankfully it didn't show in his play.
After the game we went up to the hospital to see Beppe. I prepared Quinn for what he would see, the tubes etc... We tried to keep the subject as light as possible for the kids. It's scary enough when you are adults to deal with this! When we got to her room, he asked, "so what do we do, just stare at her?" because she was vented and of course not talking. That was kind of an icebreaker for us and made us laugh. We tried to use a little humor and Quinn made some "moose ears" with his hands behind Beppe's head while I took a picture. Don't worry, no one has seen that picture outside of our family. We'll leave it up to Beppe to show around some day. : ) We know she will laugh with us.
Isy had more active bleeding today from the lungs... bright red blood in the tubing of the ventilator. Praying that this will all stop. We didn't expect this to turn into such a "big deal" but it looks like it has.
